Steve Martin has denied a report he will star in a new Father of the Bride movie about gay marriage.

The US comic took to Twitter to pour scorn on an article on detailing plans for a proposed third film in the series. “So excited to read I’m doing Father of the Bride III since I haven’t seen a script or been offered the role!” he wrote.

The respected Finke’s report suggested Father of the Bride III would see Martin return as businessman patriarch George Banks, with Diane Keaton also back as his wife, Nina. The plot supposedly centred on the couple’s son, Matty, originally played by Kieran Culkin, who reveals that he is to marry the son of a US Navy Seal. Unable to process the news, the “thunderstruck and speechless” Banks was reportedly due to find himself banished from the family home in the new storyline.

According to the original report, Father of the Bride III would have seen original director and co-writer Charles Shyer taking charge of the cameras and working on the script. However, the future of the project now looks to be in doubt.

In related news, Finke’s new website appears to have gone on hiatus less than a week after it was launched by the former Deadline editor. A note from Finke herself said she needed to spend time with her lawyers.

The famously strident US entertainment journalist left Deadline in October 2013 following disputes with owner Jay Penske, to whom she had sold the website in 2009. A post on her new site suggests the two sides remain locked in a legal battle over her future. © Guardian News & Media Limited 2014
